His most recent research work has focused on investigating the educational value of visualising data on Virtual Reality VR headset technologies. A 3D computer artist he also has expertise in practice-based research methods and reflective practice. Through his research he aims to show the value of narrative and aesthetic-led approaches to how we experience data in the 21st century.
When John is not researching, he enjoys spending time with his young family, running, hiking and cycling. He is interested in processing-structure-property relationships of advanced materials. Specifically, his work focusses on understanding the mechanisms that control deformation, fracture and fatigue of compositionally complex metallic systems such as bulk-metallic glasses and high-entropy alloys; he is additionally working on nature-inspired composites and biological materials and has extensive experience applying state-of-the-art experimental techniques to characterise materials both ex-situ and in-situ on different length scales and in various environments.
Furthermore, he is interested in the analysis of components that fail in service. Through his research, Bernd aims to design more damage-tolerant materials for energy-efficient, economically viable and safety-critical applications in sectors such as transportation, defense, and the biomedical device industry. When Bernd is not researching, he enjoys sailing on Sydney Harbour and along the coast of Australia, playing cornet when he is at home in Austria, and taking pictures when traveling the world.
