It can be frustrating for any driver to expect certain acceleration from their vehicle only to find that the vehicle seems to be hesitant while speeding up. This hesitation could be potentially dangerous in situations like entering and exiting the highway from an off-ramp, where acceleration may be necessary to merge with traffic.
A vehicle that struggles or hesitates to accelerate may be unpredictable and moments of hesitation may be coupled with equally dangerous moments of surging or unexpected acceleration. When a vehicle is hesitating during acceleration, it should be inspected by a mechanic. A vehicle with a combustion gas or diesel engine requires an exact mixture of fuel and air to run efficiently. If this mixture is thrown off in any way, it may result in an engine running too lean not enough airor too rich not enough fuel.
If you notice some symptoms like hesitation, you should have your vehicle inspected immediately. A vehicle with a failing mass airflow sensor may also stall soon after starting. Fuel Pump: The fuel pump in most modern vehicles sits inside the fuel tank and pumps fuel up to the engine. If a fuel pump cannot provide the correct pressure, fuel may have difficulty making it to the engine.
A vehicle that hesitates while accelerating or while driving up a hill may have a weak fuel pump. The computer may then not provide the engine with the correct amount of air while accelerating, causing a hesitation sensation. Fuel injectors may become dirty over time and not be able to provide as much fuel to the cylinder as is needed.
Dirty fuel injectors may cause the engine to run lean which will in turn, cause hesitation when accelerating. A top-rated mobile mechanic will come to your home or office to determine the reason why your vehicle is hesitating while accelerating.
The mechanic will then provide a detailed inspection report outlining the nature of the hesitation and the cost of any repairs that need to be made. Once the mechanic gets this information they can begin to fix any potential issues. If the mechanic believes that the mass airflow sensor has gone bad or is failing, he or she will first examine the sensor for any superficial damage.
The mechanic will also ensure that the sensor is wired correctly and that no damage has been done to the wire harness. The mechanic should then remove the mass airflow sensor and replace it with a new one if necessary. If the mechanic believes the problem is the fuel pump, he or she will remove the fuel tank if necessary to inspect the pump.
If the pump has indeed failed, the mechanic will replace it. If the fuel tank itself it beginning to show signs of age, it may be convenient to change the pump and tank at the same time. If it is not, the mechanic will remove the throttle positioning sensor and the wiring and replace them. In between removing the old sensor and replacing the new one, the mechanic should take the opportunity to clean the throttle body.
If the mechanic believe the problem is dirty or failing fuel injectors, he or she will inspect the injectors to check for any signs of damage or leakage. The mechanic should also take this opportunity to replace the fuel filter if it is not a part of the fuel pump. They will then replace the injectors and test them to make sure they are functioning properly.
In all cases, the mechanic will start the vehicle to make sure that all of the new components are working properly. Sluggish acceleration can be annoying for drivers who expect more power form their car, but it can also be dangerous in certain situations. The unpredictable nature of an engine that hesitates can increase the chance of a potential accident especially when trying to merge in and out of heavy traffic. If you notice that your vehicle seems to be underpowered, especially when accelerating, you should not drive it if possible until it can be inspected by a mechanic.

This is typically a transmission related issue. You should check the transmission fluid immediately. Low Transmission Fluid Signs. The torque converter is responsible for taking the mechanical power of the engine and converting it into hydraulic power. If the torque converter has gone bad, it will no longer be able to do this job.
No power can get to the transmission. Bad Torque Converter vs Bad Transmission. If this were the case, there would not be any movement whatsoever from the vehicle.

Ok so when i start the car and it runs idle its fine, but when i put it in gear and go to accelerate it sort of hesitates and doesnt go very fast.
When i push the gas pedal hard the RPM's dont rise for a few seconds then if i dont let off it tries to kick in all at once and my car seems to jump. Im hoping someone has had this problem before and what i need to know is if its just one sensor throwing off all the others or what?
August The problem is with you catalytic convertor. Most "cats" have a mesh screen inside of them to catch debris and carbon particles from fuel burn off and gas vapor burn off. Over time these particles start clumping together and sticking to the mesh screen inside eventually restricts the air flow through the exhaust finally resulting in lost rpms, no power and hesitation in acceleration I had this diagnosed about 3 years ago on a Ford Probe and did the same thing as you did change this, change that figuring at some point I would solve the issue spending more money and swapping out things that probably didn't need swapping out at the time.
I finally went to Midas and the mechanic took it out and came back within 10 minutes and said it is you catI have a Ford Taurus 3. When I'm driving mph and I need to pass another vehicle 2-lane hwy when I accelerate faster the car jerks strongly.

Sometimes, it felt like it jolted forward as much as 4 feet - even though my foot was firmly on the brake at all times. It became an expected event. Brakes were not sufficient to hold the car back from these sudden jolts - unfortunately.
Coming home one night, car started accelerating beyond the amount I was pushing the gas pedal and then it suddenly lost power even though I was now trying to accelerate. New dash lights - wrench, airbag, and gas all came on. Mileage display disappeared and, instead, car showed that car was empty of gas I had filled the tank night before and was showing "full" prior to this sudden change with vehicle. Repair was made to transmission speed sensor.
I try to convince myself that it's just because I was so scared driving home that night. Less than a month, the car is doing the same thing and I am having it towed back to dealership. From complaints I've seen on internet, this is a common problem and this should be subject to a recall. I believe the replacement parts are also defective. The older woman I bought the car from was told she was at fault for an accident that I now believe was completely this problem!
Specifically, while idling at a stop light in preparation for a turn, my vehicle shifted out of gear with no input from me. I noticed this when, as I attempted to slowly accelerate into the merge lane, the vehicle did not move.
There was no sound or other sign that the vehicle had shifted out of gear spontaneously. I shifted the vehicle into reverse, and the vehicle rolled back as it should. When I shifted back into drive, there was a small clunk.
The vehicle did not respond to the accelerator, up to around 1, rpms. I turned off the engine, waited 30 seconds, and restarted the engine. The vehicle then operated normally from that point forward with no signs of transmission or shifting issues.
The yellow wrench light did not reappear, and no check engine light has illuminated since that time.
I have driven approximately miles and 6 drive cycles since that time with no symptoms. My research into this issue identified the above tsbs and I contacted Ford directly about the issue.
They told me that, while those tsbs do apply to the same model and year of vehicle, my VIN was not included on the list. Search CarComplaints. Ford Focus ignition Ford Explorer transmission engine complaint electrical issue heater complaint transmission complaint paint defect Taurus recall.
